Global lead - remote and autonomous solutions

Our drive to support remote and autonomous solutions to meet digital demand led us to set up a global network of remote operations centres. Combined with our fleet of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and electric remotely operated vehicles, we deliver safe and sustainable remote survey, inspection, piloting and positioning services for the maritime industry.

What Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) services do Fugro offer?

We offer a complete range of remotely operated vehicle services designed to meet the needs of various subsea operations and offshore surveys.

Inspection and Maintenance: Our ROV services are equipped for detailed subsea inspections, ensuring the integrity and safety of underwater infrastructure. These services include visual inspections, ultrasonic testing, and other non-destructive testing techniques.

Remote Mapping: Fugro utilises ROVs for precise  mapping of the seafloor and subsea structures. This involves gathering high-resolution data that supports environmental assessments and resource management.

Environmental Monitoring: Fugro’s ROV services include environmental monitoring, which involves collecting data on water quality, marine habitats, and other ecological parameters to support environmental protection initiatives.

What are remote and autonomous vessels?

Remote and autonomous vessels are ships that can operate without a human onboard. They rely on (automated)control systems and remote operations centres to perform various maritime tasks, reducing HSSE risks for offshore personnel and therefore enhances safety. A onshore team of mariners and engineers control the USV and eROV from a remote operations centre (ROC) through a satellite connection. These inspections will be used for offshore assets, construction support services, and hydrographic and geophysical surveys.

How do remote services enhance operational efficiency?

Remote services encompass a wide range of activities, including remote inspection, data collection, and data processing. These services are managed from specialised ROCs equipped with advanced management systems and technological developments.

Remote services unlock operational efficiency in several ways:

    • Reduced operational costs - ROCs can manage multiple projects simultaneously, optimising resource allocation and reducing overall expenditures.

    • Reduced Human Presence in Remote Locations - By minimising the need for human intervention and presence in remote locations, remote services mitigate the logistical challenges and costs associated with transporting and supporting personnel in these areas.

    • Better accuracy and precision - Remote sensing tech and autonomous systems ensure precise data collection and operational execution.

    • Continuous operations - Remote services enable 24/7 operations without the limitations of human work schedules or safety limits (e.g. back deck work in rougher weather)

    • Better for the environment by reducing CO2 emission - Because USVs do not carry any personnel onboard, their size can be significantly reduced compared to conventional vessels without compromising data quality. While a traditional vessel may consume up to 7 metric tonnes of fuel per day, our 12 metre USV uses only up to 180 litres of fuel daily to power its generators and charge its batteries. This substantial reduction in fuel consumption results in up to a 95% decrease in CO2 emissions compared to a conventional survey vessel.

    • A Future Fit Workplace - Operating from a remote operations centre offers significant benefits for marine crews and opens up new talent pools for Fugro.

The key advantages of remote services include:

    • Predictable scheduling: crew members know their schedule well in advance, allowing for better planning of personal and family time

    • Work-life balance: after a 12-hour shift, crew can return home and spend time with their families, improving overall well-being

    • Increased flexibility: experts at the remote operations centre can easily sift between different projects by moving to various operations rooms, enhancing project efficiency and collaboration

    • Attracting new talent: The opportunity to work in a remote operations centre appeals to individuals who previously had no interest in or were unable to work offshore. This helps attract and retain a diverse workforce and navigate a competitive labour market

    Spaarc

Focusing on space automation, artificial intelligence and robotics, SpAARC aims to encourage more research and development of remote asset management capabilities for space, with a flow-on effect and benefits to other industries such as mining, emergency services, agriculture and maritime surveillance.

    Benefits

    01

Over 874,500 hours of remote operations

Delivered from 10 global remote operations centres, 365 days a year with 24/7 onshore supervision

    02

Up to 95 % lower fuel consumption

By shifting our operations to smaller hybrid uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), there is an immediate reduction in fuel consumption when compared to conventional vessels, which in turn means a large reduction in the overall carbon footprint of our operations

    03

Up to 100 % reduction of personnel in offshore operations

By transitioning operations to onshore remote operations centres, in most cases we can remove all personnel from offshore operations for a safer working environment

    Our insights deliver

    Safer operations

Remote and autonomous solutions can perform the most difficult offshore tasks, allowing our experts to deliver projects from onshore locations safely out of harm’s way while experiencing a healthier work-life balance.

    Faster and more informed decision-making

Through digitalisation of our remote operations and cloud processing, our clients obtain better quality insights in near real time from the comfort of their office.

    Lower carbon footprint

Remote and autonomous solutions are a springboard for a more sustainable, safe and liveable world, as our experts manage a fleet of hybrid, fuel efficient uncrewed vessels from onshore locations.
