Biodiversity

Biodiversity decline is a crisis threatening human survival. Climate change and biodiversity loss are caused by the same issues. They also reinforce each other. It’s clear we need to take urgent action.

Minimise the negative, maximise the positive

We have a biodiversity policy in place guiding our efforts to minimise the negative environmental impacts of our operations. And maximise our positive contributions by way of our services and solutions.

The main impacts of Fugro’s operations are threefold: the emission of greenhouse gasses, possible underwater noise from geotechnical drilling and survey operations, and the risk of transporting species between different habitats. We have mitigating measures in place, for example through lowering the emission intensity of our vessel fleet and increasingly using remote operations with the use of digital imagery for marine mammal observations.

Our data collection services and know-how play an important role in understanding biodiversity and the related impacts of clients’ projects. Increasingly, clients such as offshore wind developers compile environmental impact assessments, often regulated under national legislation. Fugro’s data acquisition solutions can support the implementation of the mitigation hierarchy to minimise potential environmental impacts and support the implementation of biodiversity enhancement measures.

Awareness and contribution

We work hard to raise awareness about biodiversity decline among our employees, clients, contractors, and suppliers. We also contributed to the International Marine Contractor Association Recommended Code of Practice on Environmental Sustainability, which deals with marine biodiversity.
