On 22 March, Fugro received a report that its geophysical survey vessel, Fugro Mercator, had run aground off the north coast of Elba, Italy.

Authorities were immediately notified, and the Italian Coast Guard promptly responded to provide assistance and monitor the situation. All 11 crew members on board were safely evacuated and brought ashore without injury. A coordinated salvage operation is now being planned in collaboration with international marine recovery experts and local authorities.

The exact cause of the grounding has not yet been determined. At the time of the incident, the 42-metre research vessel was conducting survey operations off the coast of Elba and had sought shelter due to worsening weather conditions. In line with Fugro’s commitment to safety and accountability, a comprehensive internal investigation will be carried out to understand the circumstances surrounding the event and to identify any necessary improvements to operational procedures.
