Following Fugro’s successful completion of the Super Typhoon Phase 1 project in 2017, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) has awarded Fugro a sizeable contract for Super Typhoon Phase 2.
This new consultancy project involves uprating and reinforcing the circuit lines of CLP’s 400 kV transmission overhead line (OHL) network in Hong Kong and nearby Shenzhen.
Super typhoons, storms that reach sustained windspeeds of at least 185 km/h, pose a risk to overhead powerlines across Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The Super Typhoon project aims to mitigate the risk of damage to CLP’s OHL transmission network during super typhoons to ensure network stability and maintain power supply. Fugro will apply a range of consultancy solutions to this project, including a wind speed study of regional super typhoons, design of ground investigation programmes, and a stability review of pylons structures, associated OHLs, foundations and the surrounding slopes in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
To analyse the behaviour of the pylon structures using second order analysis, Fugro’s engineers have teamed up with faculty members from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Fugro’s analysis will facilitate design optimisation for the pylon structure strengthening work, offering significant savings on construction time and cost, and enhancing construction safety. The team will work in close collaboration with CLP’s network development, asset management and operational branches of their regional departments during the design, tendering and construction phases of the project.
Henry Shiu, Fugro’s Consulting Service Line Director for Asia-Pacific, said: “We are very pleased that CLP has awarded this vital multidisciplinary consultancy project to Fugro and we look forward to delivering the expertise needed to support a safe and reliable electricity transmission network in Hong Kong.”
