Job Description

Location: Wallingford, Oxfordshire
Working pattern: Full-time, on site, five days per week
Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Are you curious about how soil and rock behaviour shapes the world around us? Join Fugro as a Geotechnical Laboratory Scientist and turn laboratory testing into accurate, scientifically credible data that helps customers make confident decisions about their projects. Based at our Wallingford Laboratory, you will work alongside laboratory technicians, scientists, engineers, data analysts and quality specialists in a collaborative, safety-focused environment. Reporting to the Team Lead – Rock Testing, you will contribute to complex testing programmes while developing your expertise in laboratory methods, technical interpretation and quality systems. This is a full-time, on-site position working five days per week, with some activities involving extended periods of standing.

Your role and responsibilities:

  • Perform a varied range of geotechnical laboratory tests in line with approved procedures, relevant technical standards and accreditation requirements.

  • Generate, process and review test data, checking calculations and results for completeness, consistency, accuracy and technical validity.

  • Identify anomalies, unexpected results or deviations, escalating concerns and supporting investigations and corrective actions where required.

  • Apply ISO/IEC 17025, laboratory quality systems and data-integrity principles, while contributing to audits, quality reviews and accreditation activities.

  • Support the safe and timely delivery of laboratory programmes, balancing technical quality with customer commitments and operational priorities.

  • Contribute to method development, validation and continuous improvement, helping improve the quality, efficiency and consistency of laboratory services.

  • Share knowledge with colleagues, support training and competency development, and actively promote safe working through risk assessments, toolbox talks and safety discussions.

What you’ll need to thrive in this role

Essential:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Earth Sciences, Geoscience, Applied Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Experience gained in a regulated laboratory, geotechnical-testing environment, field investigation setting or another role involving technical data analysis.

  • Strong numerical, analytical and communication skills, with the ability to interpret technical information, follow structured procedures and maintain careful attention to detail.

  • An understanding of laboratory health and safety, together with the ability to work collaboratively and complete activities that may involve sustained periods of standing.

  • Preferred: Experience using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 365 or a Laboratory Information Management System, known as LIMS.
