Job Description
About the role
Join Fugro’s Remote Operations Centre in Aberdeen as a ROC Engineer and play a key role in ensuring our remote operations capability remains available, reliable and ready for use.
Working from our centralised 24/7 onshore hub, the ROC Engineer provides hands-on technical support across operational systems, workstations, communications and remote operations infrastructure. The role supports the preparation of the ROC for upcoming operations, provides technical assistance during live activities, troubleshoots issues and works alongside specialist teams to maintain and continually improve the systems that Fugro’s remote operations depend on.
This is a rotational position, working 12-hour shifts across a three-week schedule. The role would suit someone with offshore experience within inspection, survey, ROV operations or a similar technical environment, who is practical, methodical and confident troubleshooting a range of operational technologies.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the ROC Superintendent, the ROC Engineer works closely with ROC operational teams, service lines, offshore personnel, project teams, IT, Operational Technology Services (OTS), equipment and application specialists, and third-party suppliers.
The role also involves collaboration with other Fugro Remote Operations Centres and technical teams globally, providing exposure to an evolving range of remote and autonomous technologies.
Key responsibilities include:
Providing first-line technical support for ROC operational systems, workstations, communications and associated equipment.
Preparing, configuring and checking ROC workstations and systems ahead of planned operations.
Supporting the mobilisation and demobilisation of remote operations within the ROC.
Monitoring the condition and availability of technical systems and responding to faults or reduced capability.
Troubleshooting technical issues during live operations and escalating to the appropriate technical specialists when required.
Supporting the integration and testing of systems, software, communications and equipment.
Carrying out routine checks, testing and basic maintenance within defined levels of competence and authority.
Maintaining accurate technical logs, system information, fault records and shift handovers.
Supporting configuration and change control to ensure operational systems remain controlled and traceable.
Supporting technical recovery following equipment, communication or system failures.
Assisting operational teams with technical issues affecting remote control, supervision and support activities.
Supporting trials and the introduction of new technologies and capabilities into the ROC.
Identifying recurring faults and opportunities to improve system reliability and technical performance.
Working with technical owners and specialist teams to implement improvements while maintaining appropriate operational controls.
Following Fugro QHSSE, information security, operational and technical procedures.
Contributing to lessons learned and sharing technical knowledge across the ROC team.
What You’ll Need to Thrive in This Role:
Have a strong technical understanding of operational technology, computer systems, networking, communications and associated hardware, with the ability to investigate technical issues methodically.
Be a practical problem solver who can diagnose faults, understand their impact and either resolve them within their area of competence or engage the appropriate specialist support.
Understand the demands of supporting live offshore and remote operations, where system availability, reliability and timely technical support are essential.
Be comfortable working within defined technical boundaries and recognise when an issue needs to be escalated to OTS, IT, service lines, suppliers or other technical specialists.
Be organised and capable of maintaining clear technical records, fault information, configuration details and shift handovers.
Have strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues and their operational impact to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
Work collaboratively and build effective relationships with ROC personnel, offshore teams, project teams, service lines and specialist support functions.
Take a proactive approach to identifying emerging technical issues and opportunities to improve reliability, resilience and ways of working.
Demonstrate a strong commitment to QHSSE, information security, change management and operational requirements.
Be committed to continuous learning and developing their technical knowledge as new platforms, systems and remote and autonomous technologies are introduced.
