Job Description
Job Offer: Senior Earthquake Engineer / Seismologist
Location: Flexible: Belgium, France, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, or Turkey
Fugro is seeking a Senior Earthquake Engineer / Seismologist to lead seismic hazard assessments for critical infrastructure projects including dams, nuclear facilities, and urban developments.
Reporting to a Principal Consultant, this position is responsible for leading and executing complex seismic analyses. You will support the integration of seismic data into engineering design and risk mitigation strategies, contribute to technical innovation, mentor junior staff, and engage with clients and regulatory bodies to deliver high-quality, scientifically robust seismic hazard evaluations.
You will work closely with principal geologists, seismologists, geotechnical engineers, and project managers to ensure the successful completion of data analysis and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Analysis & Assessment
Conduct Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment (PSHA) and Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (DSHA), incorporating seismic source characterization, ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs), and addressing uncertainties.
Perform seismic hazard and fault displacement analyses to develop seismic design parameters (PGA, Sa, response spectra) in compliance with ASCE 7, IBC, ICOLD, SSG-9, ISO, EC 8, or other relevant codes.
Compile, de-cluster, and manage seismic catalogues using international databases (USGS, GEM, ISC, etc.), including statistical treatment and defining periods of completeness.
Perform 1D/2D Site Response Analyses to evaluate local soil amplification effects.
Analyze and select time histories adapted to specific projects using spectral matching techniques.
Collaboration & Communication
Collaborate with geologists, geotechnical, and structural engineers to integrate seismic hazard results into engineering design and risk mitigation strategies.
Attend client meetings and technical panels, preparing and delivering presentations and workshops on technical approaches, outcomes, and recommendations.
Prepare technical reports and peer-reviewed publications, and present findings to clients and regulatory agencies.
Leadership & Development
Mentor junior engineers, as well as graduate and project engineers and consultants.
Contribute to business development by proposing innovative seismic hazard assessment methodologies.
Stay updated with advances in seismology, ground motion modelling, and geotechnical earthquake engineering.
Experience and Knowledge
Required Qualifications
Education: A Master’s or PhD in Seismology, Geotechnical Engineering with an earthquake focus, or a related field.
Working Experience: Proven experience (ideally more than 10 years) in seismic hazard assessment projects for critical facilities, including PSHA, DSHA, and SRA.
Management Experience: 3-8 years of experience managing small teams.
Languages: Proficient in English and the language of the home country.
Software Proficiency: Proficiency in seismic hazard software (e.g., OpenQuake, R-CRISIS, EZ-FRISK) and site response software (SHAKE, DEEPSOIL, Strata, or equivalent).
Skills: Strong technical writing skills and the ability to communicate complex seismic concepts to stakeholders.
License: A valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Certifications: Achieved or actively pursuing relevant certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer) or CEng (Chartered Engineer).
Geotechnical Software: Experience with software such as PLAXIS, FLAC, or GeoStudio is a plus.
Specialized Analysis: Experience in Soil Structure Interaction (SSI) Analyses.
Data Processing: Familiarity with GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) and scripting (Python, MATLAB, R).
Research: A track record of published research in reputable journals related to the field.
Training: Experience designing and delivering training programs for internal and external clients.
