Job Description

The Geotechnical Core Logging Engineer is an onshore laboratory role responsible for geotechnical core logging support, XCT and MSCL operation, scan planning, data acquisition, scan processing, data management and initial QA/QC of digital and physical core/sample records.

The role supports onshore laboratory projects by preparing and handling soil and rock samples, operating XCT and MSCL equipment in accordance with approved procedures, processing and organising scan outputs, recording observations, assisting with core logging and laboratory data workflows, and supporting project leads with timely and technically robust deliverables.

The role also assists with equipment readiness, routine maintenance, calibration/check records, consumables control, safe sample handling, radiation and equipment safety compliance where applicable, and continuous improvement of digital core logging and laboratory workflows.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Onshore Laboratory, XCT/MSCL and core logging support:

  • Work as an onshore laboratory-based engineer supporting geotechnical core logging, XCT scanning, MSCL scanning and associated laboratory data workflows.

  • Operate XCT and MSCL equipment safely and competently in accordance with approved method statements, equipment manuals, radiation safety requirements, laboratory procedures and project specifications.

  • Prepare soil and rock samples/cores for scanning, including sample identification checks, labelling, conditioning, mounting, loading/unloading, chain-of-custody verification and safe handling of heavy or fragile materials.

  • Plan and execute scan programmes based on project requirements, sample condition, priority, resolution/scan parameter requirements and downstream interpretation needs.

  • Perform XCT and MSCL data acquisition, initial reconstruction/processing, file naming, metadata capture, scan quality checks, image/data export and transfer to approved storage locations.

  • Carry out preliminary review of scan outputs, including identifying obvious artefacts, incomplete scans, sample disturbance, voids, inclusions, structural features or areas requiring re-scan or further technical review.

  • Support geotechnical core logging activities by integrating visual inspection, scan outputs and laboratory observations into clear, traceable records.

2. Data processing, records and project support

  • Maintain accurate daily production records, scan logs, equipment usage records, calibration/check records, sample movement records and data transmittal records.

  • Liaise with project leads, data team and laboratory operations to prioritise scanning, communicate progress, flag constraints and support timely reporting.

  • Assist with scan data processing and data packaging for project deliverables, including ensuring files are complete, traceable, backed up and aligned with naming conventions and project data requirements.

  • Prepare technical notes for project leads highlighting scan limitations, anomalies, re-scan requirements or items requiring specialist interpretation.

3. Equipment readiness and continuous improvement

  • Assist in developing and improving XCT/MSCL work instructions, checklists, scan templates, data workflows, acceptance criteria and competency records.

  • Perform routine equipment housekeeping, preventive maintenance checks, consumables control, fault logging and coordination with OEM/service providers for troubleshooting or servicing.

  • Support training and coaching of technicians/engineers in sample preparation, scan workflow, data handling and good laboratory practices under supervision of the relevant team lead.

  • Participate in internal audits, method validation/verification, inter-laboratory comparison, continuous improvement and accreditation-readiness activities related to core logging, XCT/MSCL and digital data workflows.

  • Perform other onshore laboratory duties reasonably assigned by the Team Lead, Laboratory Operations Manager or Regional Technical Manager.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree: Civil Engineering or related discipline

  • 3 to 8 years of working experience, within core logging or offshore facility

  • License/Certification:

  • Relevant radiation safety/X-ray equipment operator license or training is required where mandated by local regulation. Competency in XCT or MSCL is advantageous

  • Experience in onshore geotechnical laboratory operations, core logging, soil/rock sample handling or geotechnical testing.

  • Familiarity with XCT and/or MSCL operation, scan planning, image/data processing, digital file management and data QA/QC is preferred.

  • Understanding of sample traceability, chain-of-custody, laboratory quality systems, ISO 17025 principles and safe laboratory working practices.

  • Strong attention to detail, data discipline, practical troubleshooting ability and willingness to work hands-on with equipment and samples.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and coordinate priorities across operations, project, data and quality functions.
