Job Description
Fugro are hiring an experienced Design Engineer to join our team in Aberdeen. You’ll be at the forefront of developing new and enhanced equipment that enables safe, efficient, and reliable offshore projects. Working closely with the Design Engineering Team Lead, you’ll contribute to the full lifecycle of design — from early concept generation through detailed development and delivery whilst ensuring our solutions meet the evolving needs of our clients and the wider industry.
Innovation is central to how we operate, and you’ll help drive this forward by creating forward‑thinking, practical designs that push the boundaries of what our systems can achieve.
Whether you’re designing bespoke tooling, refining existing technology, or exploring new approaches to complex subsea challenges, your work will directly support the continued advancement of our capabilities. By collaborating with engineers, project managers, draughting teams, and operational colleagues, you’ll turn real‑world requirements into robust, high‑quality engineering outcomes that reinforce our position as a leader in subsea and remote technology.
Your role and responsibilities:
As the Design Engineer you will:
Produce detailed engineering designs for ROV intervention tooling and project‑specific equipment.
Ensure all work complies with departmental procedures, engineering standards, and relevant codes.
Carry out engineering design verification and validation activities, including calculations, analysis, testing, and supporting documentation.
Prepare design‑related documents such as manuals, test procedures, and reports.
Take ownership of the full engineering design process for assigned tasks and projects.
Work collaboratively with workshop, procurement, and operational teams to support successful project delivery.
Engage directly with clients to understand their needs and propose effective engineering solutions.
Contribute to tender activities by developing concept designs and providing cost, schedule, and resource estimates.
Always uphold Fugro’s commitment to safety, quality, and environmental protection.
What you’ll need to thrive in this role:
A degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Subsea, or a related engineering discipline.
Strong knowledge of engineering design principles and experience using CAD software.
The ability to carry out engineering analysis and produce clear, accurate technical documentation.
A solid understanding of relevant industry standards, codes, and HSE requirements.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
A proactive, solution‑focused mindset with the ability to manage tasks independently.
A genuine interest in designing practical, real‑world solutions for offshore challenges.
Desirable:
Experience in subsea, offshore, or ROV tooling environments.
Familiarity with hydraulic systems or heavy mechanical equipment.
Understanding of workshop processes and design for manufacture principles.
Experience interacting with clients or supporting commercial project phases.
Electrical/electronic knowledge or experience would be beneficial but not essential.
