Job Description

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Sense team in our Innovation department, responsible for building and evolving mission critical software used in real offshore and subsea inspection operations.

Sense is a suite of desktop and cloud connected applications used to visualise, analyse, and quality control largescale spatial data (point clouds, imagery, video, sonar) captured by vessels, AUVs, and airborne platforms. Your work directly supports inspection decisions on live projects around the world.

Here's what you'll do:

  • Design and build high‑performance Windows desktop applications (WPF, C#, .NET) used to interactively explore large spatial datasets.

  • Work on data‑intensive workflows involving point clouds, imagery, video, and derived inspection artefacts at scale.

  • Collaborate with domain experts (surveyors, inspectors, data specialists) to translate complex real‑world workflows into usable software.

  • Improve application performance, reliability, and maintainability in a long‑lived, production‑critical codebase.

  • Contribute to cloud‑connected capabilities backed by AWS services for data processing, storage, and distribution.

  • Participate in modern engineering practices including code reviews, CI/CD, and incremental delivery.

About You

We are looking for a Software Engineer who enjoys working on complex, real-world systems, cares deeply about code quality and user experience, and wants to see their work used in demanding operational environments.

Your success in securing this role will require:

  • Strong experience building production applications in C# and .NET, with hands‑on experience in WPF or similar desktop UI frameworks.

  • A solid understanding of software design, maintainability, and performance, especially in long‑lived codebases.

  • Experience debugging and optimising applications that handle large datasets or performance‑sensitive workflows.

  • Comfortable working with Git‑based workflows and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub, GitHub Actions).

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, and non‑software domain experts.

Extra things we value (but do not require):

  • Experience working in data-intensive or technically complex domains (e.g. geospatial, graphics, CAD, scientific or industrial software).

  • Interest in AI-assisted development tools and pragmatic use of modern engineering workflows.

  • Familiarity with AWS, Infrastructure as Code, or cloud connected desktop applications.

  • A pragmatic, technology-agnostic mindset with a willingness to adopt new tools when they deliver real value.

Who we are

We are Fugro, the world’s leading Geo-data specialist, focused on mapping, modeling and monitoring data about the earth’s surface and the structures built upon it. Within Fugro, the Sense team sits at the intersection of software engineering and real-world geodata operations. We build tools that turn raw survey data into actionable insight, supporting engineers and inspectors working on critical infrastructure across the globe. Real world data (LIDAR point clouds, imagery, sonar scan and multi-beam) is captured remotely by vessels, autonomous underwater vehicles, planes or helicopters. Data is uploaded to AWS and distilled to provide clients insights via the use of modern machine learning, scalable cloud computing, and 3D visualisation approaches.
