Job Description

Delivers differentiation through technology in our products and service delivery by 1) providing conceptual input in technical and architectural discussions, 2) understanding the business, knowing how the products Fugro builds provide value for clients and providing active input in business value discussions, 3) actively driving knowledge exchange in the organisation, 4) determining operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions, 5) assuring higher level efficiency and operational readiness of selected product components, 6) documenting and demonstrating solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, 7) assuring successful product/service/technology deployment, and 8) providing information by collecting, analysing, and summarizing development and service issues. Is well versed in given Engineering domain with a rich understanding of the systems and technologies utilised by the company in one or more service lines. Is able to lead most aspects of design, development and maintenance of hardware and/or software systems including advanced trouble shooting of operational systems. Drives inter-team knowledge sharing, skills improvement, and technical alignment within their regions by actively collaborating with other Senior Engineers on architectural designs and reviews, “known problems/solutions” sessions, and consistent adoption and application of industry best-practice. Requires a MSc or BSc degree in related Engineering field with a minimum of 5 years prior work experience utilising relevant technologies. Supports and develops less experienced engineers by providing advice, coaching, mentorship and educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
•Design, deploy, and maintain secure, highly available Kafka clusters in AWS (MSK or self-managed).
•Perform capacity planning, performance tuning, and proactive scaling.
•Automate infrastructure and configuration using Terraform and GitOps principles.
•Implement observability: metrics, Grafana dashboards, CloudWatch alarms.
•Develop runbooks for incident response, disaster recovery, and rolling upgrades.
•Ensure compliance with security and audit requirements (ISO27001).
•Collaborate with development teams to provide Kafka best practices for .NET microservices and Databricks streaming jobs.
•Conduct resilience testing and maintain documented RPO/RTO strategies.
•Drive continuous improvement in cost optimization, reliability, and operational maturity.

Required Skills & Experience
•5-6 years in DevOps/SRE roles, with 4 years hands-on Kafka operations at scale.
•Strong knowledge of Kafka internals: partitions, replication, ISR, controller quorum, KRaft.
•Expertise in AWS services: VPC, EC2, MSK, IAM, Secrets Manager, networking.
•Proven experience with TLS/mTLS, SASL/SCRAM, ACLs, and secure cluster design. Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
•Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for cluster and topic configuration.
•Monitoring and alerting using Grafana, CloudWatch, and log aggregation.
•Disaster recovery strategies.
•Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python) for automation and tooling.
•Excellent documentation and communication skills.
•Kafka Certification.

Nice-to-Have
•Experience with AWS MSK advanced features.
•Knowledge of Schema Registry (Protobuf) and schema governance.
•Familiarity with Databricks Structured Streaming and Kafka Connect.
•Certifications: Confluent Certified Administrator, AWS SysOps/Architect Professional.
•Databrick data analyst/engineering and Certification
•Geo-data experience
