Senior Full-stack Developer: VirGeo

Job Description

Within Fugro’s flagship initiative VirGeo, we are building and delivering a geodata customer engagement platform. VirGeo is a cloud-hosted ecosystem that lets stakeholders interact with complex geodata, monitor project progress and make informed decisions in near real-time on survey operations. You’ll work in a multidisciplinary team that brings Product, Design and DevOps/Engineering together, so the people who shape what we build, how it looks and feels, and how it runs in production all sit around the same table.

AI-enabled engineering is simply how we work. Our developers build alongside AI coding agents every day, we’ve invested in the instructions, skills and integrations that make those agents effective in our codebase, and we keep finding new ground. That practice only stays ahead if people keep pushing it forward, and that is a large part of this role: as a Senior Full-stack Developer you’ll be hands-on across the stack and one of the people who champions the AI mindset within the team. Developing it together with your colleagues, not for them.

Your role

• You design and build full-stack web applications and platform services (React, TypeScript, Node.js, Python), with AI agents as a standard part of your toolchain;

• You build interactive map-based tools with real-time data integration, layer control and spatial editing, combining open-source, proprietary and partner GIS components;

• You build and evolve the cloud-native services that hold up at scale: multi-tenant, resilient and cost-aware, handling large geodata volumes and concurrent users without the experience degrading;

• You contribute to architectural decisions, work closely with Product and Design from discovery onwards and with DevOps colleagues on how what you build actually runs, and mentor other developers;

• You keep our review practice ahead of our throughput. You are accountable for everything that lands, and you’ll help evolve the review habits, tests and guardrails that make high-velocity delivery safe;

• You keep advancing our AI-assisted delivery practice alongside the team: decompose work into agent-sized tasks, sharpen the context and instructions that make agents effective in our codebase, and keep human judgement where it matters — architecture, trade-offs, security and code quality;

• You extend the shared scaffolding that makes agentic work repeatable: agent instructions, reusable skills and prompts, MCP integrations with our internal systems, automated checks and evaluation of what is actually working;

• You champion the AI mindset day to day: pair with colleagues, share what you’ve learned, challenge habits that no longer hold, and help the whole team get better.

Your track record

• You have a minimum of 8 years in full-stack development, ideally in enterprise or data-intensive environments;

• You possess deep full-stack craft: strong front-end skills (JavaScript/TypeScript, React or similar) and back-end experience with Python, Java or Node.js, including API design, data modelling and service decomposition. You can reason about a whole system, not only the feature in front of you;

• You have solid experience in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), with real experience of what it takes to keep a service healthy in production;

• You are experienced with AI coding agents in production work (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot), with a method behind it: context engineering, task decomposition and verifying agent output. You can talk concretely about where agents accelerate you and where they mislead you;

• You have a track record of raising the level around you: you share practice, teach by pairing, and are comfortable being challenged by colleagues who are strong in this area too;

• Ideally, you are also experienced with mapping libraries, spatial data handling and modern identity & access management. Or the appetite to get deep into marine, offshore and remote sensing data if you haven’t worked with it before;

• You possess a strong testing discipline and healthy scepticism: the quality bar matters more, not less, when code is generated quickly;

• You are familiar with Git, CI/CD and agile ways of working;

• You have excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary team, engaging with Product, Design and DevOps as equals rather than handing work over the wall.
