Job Description

The Survey Technologist is responsible for executing low-complexity projects and supporting senior colleagues on more complex assignments. Core responsibilities include performing positioning and navigation tasks, acquiring survey data, and applying appropriate quality control procedures. The role involves setting up, operating, and calibrating positioning and survey equipment, carrying out computations and data processing, and producing accurate, customized reports and deliverables in accordance with established procedures. This includes ensuring correct offsets, measurements, and documentation. The position operates under the supervision of experienced colleagues, requires a college or university degree, and emphasizes the ongoing development of technical

knowledge.

Based in St. John’s, this role benefits from Fugro’s long-established presence and enhanced capabilities through Fugro’s Canada Remote Operations Centre (ROC). From this hub, teams support the inspection, monitoring, and integrity of offshore platforms, subsea systems, and marine infrastructure, frequently leveraging remote and uncrewed technologies to reduce the need for offshore personnel while maintaining high safety and operational standards. Although primarily intended as an offshore role with some office duties, the successful candidate may also work from the Remote Operations Centre (ROC), depending on project and operational requirements.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead by example and place Quality, Health & Safety, Security, and the protection of the Environment as core values while never intentionally placing employees, our processes, customers, or the communities in which we live and work at risk.

  • Supports the setup, interfacing, testing, calibration, and operation of the full suite of survey sensors.

  • Follows established procedures and ensures operations are conducted in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with project terms and conditions.

  • Operates online survey software and monitors the data acquisition and quality to ensure required specifications are  achieved and taking immediate corrective action when required.

  • Maintains effective and appropriate communication with client representatives, Project Manager, and other onshore and offshore departments.

  • Collects, collates and presents results from various survey sensors.

  • Develops and maintains clear and concise documentation for all survey-related activities.

  • Maintains current and accurate vessel information and comprehensive handover notes.

  • Compiles detailed reporting and processing with appropriate QC checks as required.

  • Collaborate with other team members and actively participates in project briefings, daily sessions, and safety meetings as appropriate.

  • Be available for potential offshore survey roles as required without a firm project schedule.

  • Maintains proficiency a develops new skills through experience and working with a diverse range of survey tools and software.

Job Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada, without restrictions.

  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid passport.

  • Possess current driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Possess a degree in Geomatics Engineering or diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology.

  • Have knowledge of commonly used survey sensors, e.g. GNSS, Gyro, MRU, USBL.

  • Have knowledge of the principles of real-time positioning, data acquisition and data QC.

  • Have knowledge of and ideally some experience with operating online survey software packages.
