The management of UXO risk is critical to avoid delay, cost overrun and possible injury in development and construction projects in many parts of the world. We provide a range of survey services to help reduce the risks associated with unexploded bombs and other ordnance.

Land probing and drilling surveys

To investigate specific locations such as proposed piles, boreholes, shafts or deep excavations, we use magnetic sensors attached to cone penetration testing (CPT) or drilling equipment. 

Our CPT Magcones simultaneously collect geotechnical data - including friction ratio and pore water pressure – to detect ferrous objects in the proximity of the probe. Typically, the area checked is 1 m to 4 m in diameter (0.5 to 2 m radius from the cone), which is usually sufficient for clearing multiple pile locations, depending on site conditions and expected bomb size. Magcones can be deployed from a variety of rigs, both on land - using trucks, crawlers, mini-rigs, rail vehicle and, excavator arms - and offshore, using jack-up platforms and seabed probing systems.

For tougher soil conditions, Fugro’s Magdrill system can be used to penetrate very dense gravels or made ground that contains rubble. Our Magdrill is based on comparable technology and can be used with any drilling rig to provide a cost–effective and rapid means of detecting buried metallic objects within a wide sphere. 

The Magdrill system is lowered into the drilled hole periodically as the drilling progresses, scanning the ground below the hole to enable drilling to progress safely. 

Land geophysical surveys

To investigate open areas of ground, we conduct geophysical surveys using magnetic and electromagnetic techniques. These detect ferrous objects in the subsurface and provide rapid coverage. They are often used to decide where intrusive investigations should be targeted. Geophysical methods are most effective at sites where there are few other metallic objects or structures above or below the surface. 

Marine geophysical surveys

To investigate UXO on or below the seabed, we conduct magnetometer and gradiometry surveys using towed arrays that can operate from very shallow to deepwater conditions. We have a lot of experience working at challenging coastal sites using specialist access and investigation methodologies to map UXO in shallow transition zones that link land and marine environments. For deep clearance before piling or drilling, we deploy Magcone probing systems from jack-up platforms or seabed CPT frames.
