GIS and data management

We have considerable experience in designing, building and managing spatial data using a fully-formatted map-based GIS front end to intuitively access, interrogate and analyse all data associated with a development project. We work closely with clients to develop bespoke GIS solutions and powerful custom tools to suit each project’s needs and provide targeted functionality.

Access is provided to project data in both 2D and 3D, via local software or secure web-portal. Effectively managed spatial data can be exploited using spatial analysis tools to perform engineering calculations, routing assessments and much more.

Fugro’s GIS database solutions harness industry-leading GIS software to host and manage all relevant geo-datasets. Industry standard data models, where available, are blended with Fugro-developed data models to create a fit-for-purpose architecture. The GIS database is a central repository for all data of relevance to a site development and provides simple and intuitive access to these datasets. The powerful out-of-the-box functionality of the host software is complemented by Fugro’s customised tools to enhance the overall usability of the GIS database.

Our GIS database solution ensures all data are easily searchable through a single intuitive interface. Searched and filtered datasets can be further analysed using the powerful spatial analysis tools within the GIS software, or readily exported for further manipulation in external applications.

  • Fugro GIS and data management includes the following key services:
  • Architecture, development and delivery of GIS databases containing interacting geo-datasets
  • Customised software applications for data analysis and integration
  • State-of-the-art visualisation in 3D geomodels
  • Spatial data management and analysis
  • Web portal delivery of dynamic site investigation data sets

GIS data management has many diverse applications, making it a very flexible tool and an essential part of a development project

Single source of information

A complementary suite of data models hosts all relevant datasets via a map-based interface to allow the spatial interrelations between different datasets to be fully exploited. Access to all datasets through a single intuitive interface minimises the risk of not using all of the hard-won data associated with a site development

Three-dimensional visualisation

Once all data are managed in a coherent database, the GIS solution facilitates state-of-the-art visualisation in both two- and three-dimensions. Three-dimensional visualisation is a powerful way to understand the spatial relationships between each dataset, and is  a very effective communication tool for project stakeholders.

Geospatial analysis for geohazard assessment

Effectively managed spatial data can be used for a wide range of geospatial analysis, such as site-wide slope stability assessments. These use pixel-based raster calculations to combine layers of sediment strength, density and site geometry to generate factor of safety maps against slope instability.

Geospatial data dissemination

Using the latest technology, GIS data can be delivered via a GIS web-portal, accessed via a secure login through an internet browser. This approach is particularly effective for distributing essential data to a broad audience of non-GIS specialists. A GIS web-portal is also useful for the delivery of live datasets in semi-real-time, such as during periods of data acquisition.

Fugro’s approach to GIS and Data Management combines best practice geospatial architecture, development and delivery to produce an optimal solution for each project. Our GIS databases are developed by geospatial experts and data specialists, ensuring that each dataset’s spatial representation is optimised.

  • Reduce risk of not using all hard-won data for the benefit of a project
  • Exploit spatial interrelations between multiple datasets
  • The result of spatially integrating multiple datasets is greater than the sum of the component parts
  • GIS-based data visualisation is an effective analysis and communication tool
  • Delivery formats are available to suit a range of needs, from detailed data analysis to broad-audience data dissemination
