SCANNER is a national standard in the UK and is designed to give consistency and reliability to pavement condition results for all classified roads from any accredited contractor.
Commenting on the results, Dr. Alex Wright of TRL said, “It is clear that Fugro has worked hard on the crack detection system, resulting in a performance comparable with the best of the UK SCANNER fleet.”
Fugro’s ARAN vehicles are the only SCANNER platform to offer highway authorities the option of integrated collection of ground penetrating radar (GPR) giving information on pavement construction and layer thickness to complement SCANNER surface data. The combined package allows clients to compare patterns of distress or specific defects with hidden changes below the road surface.
Fugro takes the science and the practice of highway asset management very seriously. For instance, engineers from Fugro spend time out in the field collecting manual research test sections alongside the US Federal Highways and the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario in Canada. David Lowe, Managing Director commented, “Our whole purpose at Fugro is to maximise the value our clients get from our products and services and help them turn data into actionable information. It’s always exciting to set a new level in the bar of excellence that others must step up to.”
