With tragic impacts on coastal communities from natural disasters this year in Asia and now from Hurricane Katrina on the GulfCoast , we must encourage young people who pursue careers in marine science and engineering, ” explained Fugro GEOS Regional Director Jan van Smirren.

Recipient of the $10,000 graduate student scholarship from SUT Houston was Jason Stutes, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in marine sciences at the University of South Alabama at Dauphin Island Sea Lab.

SUT Houston presented $5,000 undergraduate scholarships to Tina Mezzatesta, a junior, and Laura Truxal, a senior, studying marine sciences at TexasA&MUniversity at Galveston .

Another recipient, Aditya Aggarwal, was a junior in naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of New Orleans before storm waters flooded the city. He will apply his scholarship to TexasA&MUniversity at College Station this semester and hopes to return to UNO next year after conditions there improve.

We are making a difference to individuals as we continue to support students and education in the offshore arena,” said SUT Houston Chairman Christopher Lindsey-Curran.

Fugro GEOS, the world’s leading oceanographic company, awarded its own scholarship worth $5,000 to Andrew McInnes, a senior in ocean and coastal resources at TexasA&M University at Galveston.

SUT is a multi-disciplinary association linking members from more than 40 countries who share a common interest in underwater technology, marine science and offshore engineering.

This is the second year that Fugro GEOS and SUT Houston have collaborated to award scholarships in support of marine science, engineering and underwater technology education.
