Ensuring a floating production asset remains afloat in position and in production should be the top priority of any team operating such an asset. Its performance and integrity relies on critical information such as mooring configuration, motion and positioning.

Fugro has taken its extensive experience in monitoring offshore environmental forces and their impact on structures and combined it with its expertise in positioning offshore assets to develop NorthStar™, an integrated management and advisory system. NorthStar™ monitors multiple data systems and helps improve the performance, efficiency and safety of floating production assets.

Such immediate access to integrated data provides early detection and warns when design limits are being exceeded or components are deteriorating or failing, which could lead to potential HSE risks.

Floating production assets rely on accurate and timely information derived from diverse sensors and subsystems that collect and relay data about environmental, positional and structural conditions. NorthStar™ integrates all of these data and presents them in a single, intuitive interface in real-time, presenting a unique overview of such conditions. It collects and interprets data on the meteorological and oceanographic environment, provides forecasts to aid planning of weather critical conditions and delivers structural integrity data for safe, effective and timely maintenance and intervention programs.

“Such immediate access to integrated data provides early detection and warns when design limits are being exceeded or components are deteriorating or failing, which could lead to potential HSE risks,” explains Pim Peereboom, Global Product Manager at Fugro.

Attuned to specific facilities and conditions, and benefiting from Fugro's extensive in-house expertise and resources, NorthStar™ offers a unique and reliable asset-wide overview that contributes to the improved management of facilities, efficiency optimisation, contingency planning and offers solutions for enhanced production. It is modular, flexible and intuitive, provides the right information at the right time. Helping to make quick informed decisions required to optimise production and maximize efficiency.

In 2011 after a severe storm, a FPSO facility shut down after breaking loose from its anchorage. Dozens of workers required rescue and the vessel suffered significant damage. It took 4 years and an estimated $1.8 billion to reinstate the ship.
