Piezocone evaluation of undrained strength in soft to firm offshore clays

An ongoing database study is investigating the relationships between series of laboratory measured undrained shear strengths (su) on sedimentary clays with piezocone measurements to improve the statistical reliability over current approaches. One issue is the large family of su modes, thus this study focuses solely on anisotropically-consolidated tests (CAUC, DSS, CAUE) in order to better quantify the well-known cone factors Nkt, Nu, and Nke. Whereas a total of 51 clays is contained in the full database, herein, a special subset of 17 clays is used to address some findings to date concerning soft to firm offshore clays. Specifically, the assessment of Nkt is slightly improved by consideration of pore pressure readings in terms the normalized effective cone resistance: Qu =(qt −u2)/σvo.
