Mining

Fugro is your partner of choice for mining projects. We are a quality international company specialising in geotechnical, environmental, hydrological, geological, and survey services. We are integrated throughout the life cycle of a mine development, providing a range of services from desk study, reconnaissance, exploration through feasibility, construction into operation, and ultimate closure. We have a permanent presence throughout the world and have been successfully engaged in projects throughout the Americas, Africa, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Exploring, developing, and operating a world-class mine brings complex challenges. Huge capital investments are often made in very demanding environments. Projects need to be delivered on-time and on-budget to critical safety and environmental standards. Success requires dedication to project management and technical excellence through all development phases. It requires a “can do” attitude and an intimate knowledge specific to the industry which comes from many years of experience.

We are the leading provider for the collection and interpretation of data relating to the earth’s surface and sub-surface to support mining infrastructure development and operation on land, along the coast and on the seabed. Our experience in support of the development of mining facilities includes:

  • Open pit mines
  • Tunnels
  • Infrastructure corridors (roads, railways, power transmission, pipelines)
  • Ports and harbours
  • Tailings facilities
  • Water and environmental management
  • Monitoring safety and integrity of operating facilities

We have the resources and expertise to provide a single-source bundled package of geo-services to the mining industry.

A desk study is often considered the most cost-effective phase of a mining project. It minimises the risk of unexpected ground conditions which could increase costs and/or project delays.

We undertake a survey of the site through existing data in order to identify specific features and investigate the history of the site by reviewing available data and information related to the site. Through our study, we begin to determine the probable geological conditions beneath the site – including soil type, rock type, ground gas emissions, groundwater existence, vegetation, and contamination. We are able to assist you in identifying potential geological liability at the site associated with unknown ground conditions, including stability issues.

We can provide you with:

  • Interpretation of aerial and satellite images
  • Exploration program design
  • Country studies
  • Market analysis
  • Site characteristics

During reconnaissance, we aim to further research desk study information and conclusions. We collect data through field observation of existing conditions and provide you with feedback on possible construction issues.

Appropriate equipment is imperative to the reconnaissance of a site and for the productivity of field personnel. We give you the right equipment and personnel to begin further identification of ground characterisation, slope stability, obstructions, and/or hazardous conditions.

We provide:

  • Regional geochemical and geological surveys
  • Remote sensing
  • Airborne geophysics

Developing a successful land site exploration programme requires considered planning. Subsurface characterisation produced by a well-thought-out exploration programme can eliminate or reduce expensive surprises during and after construction. We have the appropriate equipment, experience, and personnel to develop and conduct an effective site exploration programme for projects of any scope at any location.

Mining projects with great sensitivity to soil behaviour increasingly rely on sophisticated testing programs. We operate advanced soils testing laboratories where soil samples from onshore and offshore projects around the world are sent for intricate analyses.

Laboratory analyses mimic the effect of cyclic loads such as wave action, wind, and earthquakes. Special protocols such as temperature and humidity-controlled sample storage are also available to provide quality assurance throughout the testing process.

We provide:

  • Drilling
  • Wireline logging
  • Trenching
  • Sampling
  • Geochemistry
  • Geophysics
  • Mapping
  • Training
  • Resource estimation
  • Permitting

Some of the most critical phases of a project are at the pre-feasibility and feasibility stages. The quality of environmental, geological, and geotechnical engineering forms the baseline for the success of your project. We have a large team of premier engineers to provide these services. In addition, we are a world leader in geologic hazard assessment and our engineering capability is integrated with our field data collection.

It is at this stage we provide on-site geotechnical information, analyse geophysical characteristics of the proposed location, fly topographic surveys (LIDAR), and gather bathymetric data for ports and harbour developments. We integrate all this data and its conclusions into a GIS system.

We provide:

  • Drilling
  • Wireline logging
  • Geophysics
  • Hydrological assessment
  • High precision land surveys
  • Resource modelling and classification
  • Environmental impact studies
  • Mine planning
  • Economic analysis

We are a market leader when it comes to providing engineering and construction support to the mining industry. With strength in coastal engineering and construction, our global fleet of jack-up platforms is active throughout the world, supporting geotechnical investigations of ports and harbours.

We are able to drill large diameter shafts in hard rock and utilise this technology in desalination plant water intakes. Infrastructure support skills extend to pipelines, railroads, and foundations for crushers, mechanical handling, and mineral processing units. We also provide on-site construction materials testing laboratories and deep pile foundation testing in support of the EPC phase. We are proud of our safety record and we share the same philosophies with owners when it comes to safe mining operations. We offer a managed solution to our work and understand that efficient and economical execution of our deliverables drives a successful project.

We can provide you with:

  • CPT services
  • Drilling
  • Wireline logging
  • Geophysics
  • Work plans
  • Mineral processing plan
  • Permitting procedure
  • Drainage design
  • Slope stability assessment
  • Landscape planning
  • Infrastructure design

Geotechnical and geological analysis of slope stabilities, in situ geo monitoring, and periodic LIDAR surveys of open pit developments and stockpiles are a few of the services that we can provide. Our global cone penetration technology (CPT) is used to determine the integrity of tailings facilities and our hydrology and geohydrologists provide accurate recommendations on water mapping, pollution control, and similar ongoing mining operational issues. We also provide mine closure plans and ongoing safety monitoring of closed mines.

Our services include:

  • CPT services
  • Drilling
  • Wireline logging
  • Geophysics
  • Mine layout
  • Environmental audits
  • Training
  • Mine closure plan
  • Monitoring
  • Re-cultivation

The exploration, development, operation, and closure of a large mine brings unique environmental, logistical, and technical challenges. We have a full understanding of these challenges and are aware that mining projects are often difficult to develop. Locations can be remote, at problematic altitudes or in pristine environmental locations distant from the point of export. Maximizing the benefit to local people is essential and safe execution of project safely with no harm to the environment is mandatory.

We pride ourselves on:

  • The quality of our technical expertise and ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Our awareness of all the risks associated with a major development and our ability to deliver a total risk management solution.
  • Our commitment to quality, safety, and the environment
  • Our commitment to excellence
  • maintaining our technical edge with ongoing investment in technology and equipment
  • Our commitment to safety, environmental protection, sustainable development, and governing regulations and laws in the communities where we work.
