Underwater Positioning and Inertial Navigation

To support its underwater survey and ROV activities, Fugro require to position underwater sensors and structures to the highest accuracy. This is especially so in deep water where ''normal'' acoustic ranging methods (LBL) may be difficult and expensive to install. In these circumstance, an Inertial Navigation System (INS) provides an additional positioning solution. Fugro has developed a family of INS positioning solutions that are all hosted in an umbrella application called FineTrack This is a framework that hosts a varietry of INS positioning methods and hardware platforms.

The Starfix.FineTrack-L200 is designed for both accurate ROV positioning and for bridging short position outages whilst providing a high degree of Quality Control.
The L200 hardware consists of an attitude and heading sensor and a Doppler Velocity Log. This system will significantly reduce the amount of short-term random position noise that is typical for deepwater USBL tracking.

At the other end of the spectrum is the FineTrack-T100 system, which combines a High Grade Inertial Navigation Sensor with specialist software that can reliably operate over extended periods without position aiding. The Fugro FineTrack-T100 system is a tightly coupled subsea inertial navigation system capable of accurate relative positioning, independent of water depth. The system provides 10Hz position updates and can be used together with a strongly reduced number of acoustic ranging (LBL) transponders (compared with a traditional solution that is based upon LBL only). A typical application of this system is "offset well" positioning, where precise location guidance is required to drill a new oil or gas well at a precise relative position. One of the primary benefits of the system is that it can, in many cases, eliminate the requirement for a surface deployed acoustic LBL array and hence for a deployment vessel. Instead operations are conducted using the drill rig's ROV. This results in a significant cost reduction, removal of calibration errors and much-reduced HSE exposure. FineTrack's fast, continuous updates provide superior ROV guidance, which if coupled with
