Our SMARTPIPE® is an integrated module fitted in a seabed frame. The module includes a standardised pipe section that directly measures pipe-soil interaction forces in three dimensions.

Soft clay soils occurring in deep-water environments are notoriously difficult to sample and characterise, particularly in the upper 50 centimetres where pipelines and flow-lines interact with the seabed.

Developed in collaboration with BP and the University of Cambridge, our SMARTPIPE is a cost-saving system that models the forces that come into play when subsea pipelines interact with seabed soils. It’s capable of measuring loads and excess pore water pressures and displacements during the movement of a real size pipeline section. It can even operate in water depths up to 2,500 metres.

Easily deployed from the deck of a geotechnical vessel, the SMARTPIPE® system allows remote control and real-time data acquisition. The collected data is indispensable for the design of HPHT oil pipelines.

Although the system was designed for very soft deepwater clays, it also performs well in silty carbonate sands at shallow water depths.

Our SMARTPIPE system consists of:

  • An instrumented section of polypropylene-coated steel pipe with interface roughness (Ra) of about 5 µm to 10 µm mounted on a deployment frame
  • Pipe instrumented with force sensors, displacement sensors and pore-water pressure sensors
  • Conventional or mini T-bar for shallow monotonic and cyclic soil testing or a CPT for shallow monotonic testing
  • Fibre optic umbilical cable to measure and collect real-time data from the pipe loads, displacements and pore-water pressures during pipe movements
