FUGRO awarded contract on Thames Tunnel project

Leidschendam, The Netherlands, 30 Jul 2009

''Thames Water Utilities Ltd have recently awarded Fugro a marine site investigation contract associated with the London Tideway Tunnels Project. Fugro Engineering Services Ltd (FESL) as the Main Contractor are working together with Fugro Seacore Ltd on this project. FESL are currently involved on the land site investigations associated with this project.

The purpose of these investigations is to gather data required to deliver the Thames Tunnel, a major new project that is needed to reduce the risk of untreated sewage overflowing from London's sewers into the River Thames after rainfall. Annually 32 million cubic metres of sewage is discharged to the tidal River Thames from the sewer network. The discharges currently happen more than once a week on average, due to lack of capacity in London's existing sewer network.

Starting in west London, the Thames Tunnel will need to be linked to 34 Combined Sewer Overflow points that discharge into the tidal River Thames. The tunnel, which will be up to 75m below ground, is broadly expected to follow the course of the River Thames. Initial projections suggest the cost of the London Tideway Tunnels will be approximately £2 billion.''
