World's Largest Lng Port Orders Fugro Oceanor Buoys

The Jan De Nul Dredging Ltd - Boskalis Westminster Middle East Ltd Ras Laffan Joint Venture, on behalf of Qatar Petroleum, has ordered three multi-parameter Fugro OCEANOR WAVESCAN buoys to provide near real-time environmental monitoring in Ras Laffan Port, Qatar.

06 Aug 2008

Ras Laffan Port is the largest LNG export facility in the world, capable of accommodating the largest LNG, VLCCs and heavy cargo / dry cargo vessels as well as supply vessels. Fugro OCEANOR's WAVESCAN buoys will form an integrated part of the existing meteorological and oceanographic monitoring system in the port which has been operating successfully since 2004. This system measures meteorological information, tides, waves and current profiles and provides it in near real-time to the pilots. All data are measured around the Port and displayed in the control tower for the Pilots and Port Offices. Fugro designed the complete system which was customised with online and offline displays and reports to meet all the client's requirements. The system was installed and is maintained by Fugro specialists.

The WAVESCAN buoys will extend the parameters being monitored in the port. Each of the three buoys will provide important information about the following parameters: directional waves, sea temperature, conductivity/salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, oxidation reduction potential, turbidity, fluorescence/chlorophyll, hydrocarbon, floating hydrocarbon / oil & petroleum, UV-B, PAR, current speed and direction profile. Together they will provide comprehensive information about the water quality in the port environment. This will enable Qatar Petroleum to keep strict control of all Ras Laffan port operations and monitor the marine environment. A number of meteorological parameters have been added on one of the buoys to provide critical information at the selected location. In addition, two extra seabed wave/tide gauges will be installed to further enhance the data available within the port.
